Cao Shu
Cao Shu's artistic practice encompasses mixed-media installations and sculptures, AIGC video works, and digital game installations, constructing intricate meaning-networks with branching narratives that interweave diverse mediums while probing historical events and individual memories to pose open-ended, question-driven investigations; his recent research engages nuclear energy as a spectral medium and its impact on 20th-century Cold War narratives, multi-species studies fused with Lovecraftian sci-fi, monster psychology intersecting the collective unconscious, and the transformation of human memory through 3D digital media.
Cao Shu is the recipient of the OCAT x KADIST Emerging Media Artist Award (2022), Exposure Award of PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai (2021), and BISFF Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement (2017). In 2024, he has been the Finalist of
E.A.T. Prize. He has held solo exhibitions in art Institutions such as HOW Art Museum Shanghai 2024, Muffatwerk Munich 2023, Imagokinetics Hangzhou 2021, Zhejiang Museum Hangzhou 2019, Koganecho Yokohama 2019, Salon Mondial Basel 2017. He has exhibited in art museums around the world, such as Kunsthausbaselland, Matadero Madrid Centre for Contemporary Creation, White Rabbit Gallery Sydney, M+ Museum Hongkong, Power Station of Art Shanghai (PSA), UCCA Center for Contemporary Art Dune, BY ART MATTERS Hangzhou, Macao Art Museum, OCAT Shanghai, Sleep Center New York, etc. Cao Shu has been the artist-in-residence at multiple institutions such as the Atelier Mondial Basel (2017), Yokohama Koganecho Bazzaar (2019) and Muffatwek Munich, Kadist Art Foundation (2024).
